World of Warcraft Jewelcrafting Profession Guide
Jewelcrafting was added in the first expansion to World of Warcraft, The Burning Crusade. Jewelcrafting is another "Primary" Tradeskill as I like to call it. Without a Jewelcrafter around there would be no one to make gems. That means you could never maximize the potential of your socketed gear.
Jewelcrafting is a profession very similar to enchanting. You never run out of people to buy your gems, or that need gem cuts! Making this a great profession if your main priority is to make some cash.

From 300 to 350 you will be cutting the outlands green gems into usable gems. You can find patterns for these at your trainers and vendors at the Inn in Thrallmar and Honor Hold. When you learn the recipes they will be yellow, luckily they come in 4 brackets.

At this point you will need to complete the Jewelcrafting dailies from the Jewelcrafting hubs in either Orgrimmar or Stormwind. Each Jewelcrafting daily awards a single Jewelcrafters Token which you can trade for blue gem recipes. At this point it will take awhile for you to raise your Jewelcrafting but it is pretty much the only way you can.
Choosing a Second Profession
Choosing a Second Profession with Jewelcrafting is simple, Enchanting! With Enchanting you will be a fully fledged self-supplying machine. You'll never have to look for another person for anything! Of course another option is to go Mining, to supply for your Jewelcrafting profession with ore and gems. But thats just not fun!
Extra Benefit to Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafters will be able to make extra powerful gems to put into their gear. These gems will give you more stats than normal gems with no extra cost to make.
Profiting Off Jewelcrafting
Profiting off Jewelcrafting is like gambling. You can buy a Stack of Ore from the Auction House and Prospect it and get two blue gems and double your money. Or you can buy a stack of ore, prospect it and get 0 blue gems and lose money. Then you can also buy the actual gem on the auction house, cut it and put it back on for an increased price.
Profiting off Jewelcrafting will require you to know your servers econemy well enough. If you're curious as to what normally sells well on the auction house, I've put together a list of gems:
