Zell Card - FF8 Guide

Zells Mother for Zell Card

Location: Balamb Town
Region: Balamb
NPC: Zell's Mother (Ma Dincht)
Card Mod: 3 Hyper Wrists
First Available: Disc 1

You can get the Zell card extremely early on in the game from playing against his mother in Balamb Town. When you first enter the town while still on the main road you'll find Zell's house just before the entrance to the harbor (shown in the screenshot below).

Early on in the game you probably won't have good enough cards to beat Zell's mother. If you do, you're a lot better than me at the card game. I'd recommend that if you don't feel like playing hundreds of games until you get lucky enough to beat her you wait until you get the Ifrit Card and Diablos Card.

You'll get both of these within a few hours after starting the game so you won't have to wait that long. After obtaining both of these cards Zell's mother will stand much less of a chance against you.

Zell Card Hyper Wrist Card Mod

The Card Mod for Zell's Card is insanely good, especially considering how early in the game you can get it. The Hyper Wrist item gives your GF an ability that boosts strength by 60% - and you get three of them! I highly recommend that you Card Mod Zell's Card immediately after you get it and use it on two of your available GFs (Shiva and Quezacotl).

If you're wondering what GFs to teach them to, there are two good combinations that I have come to after much research. Here are the combinations and why I came to the conclusion of these three.

Shiva, Ifrit and Quezacotl: These 3 GFs are commonly separated in each build, some people recommend pairing at least one of them though

Shiva, Carbuncle, Quezacotl: These 3 GFs have to remain separate at all times since they're the only 3 GFs with Vit-J. That makes these the safest choice for these sorts of items

Note: If you need to free up some ability slots on a GF purchase Amnesia Greens from the Timber Pet Shop and unlearn abilities that you don't need (Draw, Item, Magic, GF are all abilities you can get rid of on most GFs)
