Luigi's Mansion Review

Luigi's Mansion is an extremely short action adventure games for Nintendo Gamecube. It's fairly unique compared to the other games in the Mario series and has spawned a few sequels since it game out with the launch of the Nintendo Gamecube. Those of you looking for a type of game closer to Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64 or even kind of like Banjo Kazooie will find this game quite enjoyable. The main difference between this game and all of the others is it isn't in any way a Platformer.

Story - 4/10
Soundtrack - 10/10
Graphics - 8/10
Gameplay - 7/10
Controls - 6/10
Overall - 7/10

Story 4/10

Well, the story for this game is really kind of not existant. I mean there is one but it's not really a story that you get into or captivates you. It's got funny parts and cute dialogue but there's really no deep emotional, intellectual or moral thing to take away from the game. Maybe don't be so stupid to go to a mansion you won in a contest you didn't enter? Yea, that's a good lesson.

You'll get a few chuckles from the dialogue but if you're looking for a better story you may want to try another game. It's all about the gameplay here baby!

Soundtrack 10/10

Luigi's Mansion soundtrack is simply amazing. I mean, it's so good that Luigi himself hums pretty much all the songs throughout the whole game, that's just how catchy the tunes are! One that stuck with me even after beating the game is the song that plays while you're in the outside areas of the mansion. Take a listen to the song here!

Graphics 8/10

Luigi's Mansion was a title release for Gamecube which means the purpose of this game, well, one of them, was to show off what the Gamecube could do graphically. The graphics of this game are definitely well done, no glitches or really any tearing or issues lagging at all. Probably one of the reasons the game is so short is because they spent more time making sure it was as pretty as possible. It definitely gets a passing grade on graphics.

Gameplay 7/10

As I mentioned earlier this game is all about the Gameplay and I definitely had a lot of fun while playing it. The game itself is extremely short which is probably my main gripe about it but honestly it started to get a bit repetative towards the end anyway. I mean you can literally break the entire game down into clear a room, get a key, clear another room, get another key. Rinse repeat for all 50 or so rooms of the mansion.

It's fun to play though, each ghost has a unique way to beat it/capture it and each room has quite a few hidden treasures. It's a game that will require an equal amount of thinking and fast fingers to beat. Considering it only should take you 6 - 10 hours to beat or so I would say the game is definitely worth your time.

Controls 6/10

The controls are the second issue I have with this game and it's an extremely minor issue at that. Everything works and is comfortable except for the inverted vacuum. I know some people might like inverted controls but not I, I semi got used to it by the end of the game but there were still some moments it made me mess up.

Overall 7/10

All in all I had a lot of fun with Luigi's Mansion. Growing up I always saw commericals for it and I read all about it in gameinformer but I never had the chance to play it. After having played it and beat it I can definitely see why it was a title they chose to release with the Gamecube. It's a great game and really shows what the system is capable of. Luckily these days we don't have to worry about the price tag being so high which would have been probably my only gripe with the game. There's no justification for charging 30 - 50$ for a game that you can beat in under half a day.

As aforementioned this game will require an equal amount of thinking and fast fingers to beat. If you're looking for an action adventure experience with a decent amount of puzzles this may just be the game for you. Also keep in mind this game was released with the Gamecube for a reason, the reason being it is a solid game that mostly everyone will enjoy.
