Dragon Genes Locations & Guide
This guide covers all of the Dragon Genes that you can find throughout Breath of Fire III. Dragon Genes are used for Ryu's Ascension ability which allows him to transform using the power of The Brood. You won't find the Dragon Genes that are given to you automatically throughout the game mentioned on this page, I figured since they're automatic there was no reason in adding them into this guide. The rest of the Dragon Genes are mentioned in the same order that you'll find them in game.
Dragon Reverse Gene - (Forest Near Momo's Tower)
You can gather this Dragon Gene extremely early on in the game after escaping from Balio and Sunder on the mountain tops. It's easy to find in the ? forested area of Eastern Wyndia.
Dragon Thorn Gene - Rocket Crash Site
The Rocket Crash Site is where the Thorn Dragon Gene is found, just search behind a tree on the eastern end of the area to find it. This crash site won't appear until you've cleared Momo's Tower and gotten her as a companion.
Dragon Frost Gene - Maekyss Gorge
If you missed this Dragon Gene when you're a kid, don't worry - you'll be coming back to Maekyss Gorge multiple times throughout the game for a quest when Ryu is an adult. The Dragon Gene in question is found at the northern end of Maekyss Gorge just outside the house where you'll find the lady that teaches you about Sishu.
Dragon Thunder Gene - ? House in Rhapala Region
When you make it to the Rhapala Region search the house in the northern end of the area marked with a ?. You'll find the Thunder Dragon Gene on the beach behind the house, use the R button to move your camera so you can see it.
Dragon Eldritch Gene - Top of Lighthouse
The Eldritch Gene is found atop the Lighthouse in the port town of Rhapala. In order to gain access to the light house you'll need to complete a mini side quest for The Guild in town. It's a long ordeal but it's part of the main quest line so you'll have to do it.
Dragon Miracle Gene - Mt. Zublo (Inside Dungeon)
East of Rhapala after you gain access to Mt. Zublo you'll be able to find the Miracle Gene inside the caves. It's almost impossible to miss this one since the path going through the dungeon passes right by it - and you have to go through this dungeon more than once. That said, you will have to cross some lava to reach the Dragon Gene.
Dragon Force Gene - Underground Lab (In vents)
After Ryu grows up and starts recruiting his old party members back you'll visit The Plant a second time. This time you'll need to go down into the furnace which will take you into a large under ground laboratory. In this dungeon you'll find the Dragon Force Gene along some vents.
Dragon Gross Gene - Tidal Caves
The Dragon Gross Gene is found at the end of the Tidal Caves dungeon. Just before you exit the dungeon and find yourself back on the world map heading south you'll find the Gross Gene. Alternatively, if you some how missed this your first time through the area, enter the Tidal Caves region from the southern end - not the northern end. You'll enter the dungeon on the side of the Dragon Gene in this case.
Dragon Mutant Gene - Steel Beach
After you get permission to enter Steel Beach to look for parts, you'll want to search the far northeastern shore to find the Dragon Mutant Gene. It's right out in the open at the most northeastern point in the whole area, just next to the water's edge.
Dragon ??? Gene - House that's west of Junk Town
Once you make it to the Urkan Region you'll be able to obtain the ??? Dragon Gene. It's found on the penninsula to the south inside of the ? House. Inside of the house, you'll need to use the R button to change the camera angles so you can see the ??? Gene. Or just run around and spam A on the other side of the cloth.
Dragon Trance Gene - Yggdrasil in the Lost Shore region
Right after you cross the Ocean for the first time and explore the outside areas you'll come across another Yggdrasil Tree. This one can't be a Master like the one on the other side of the world and when Peco interacts with it, not much is said. There is however a Dragon Gene right behind the tree.
Dragon Failure Gene - Colony
In the Lost Shore region you'll find a dungeon named Colony, it's just northeast of the Yggdrasil Tree. Inside of this dungeon in the southwestern portion of it you'll find the Dragon Failure Gene.
Dragon Radiance Gene - Container Yard
There's two ways for you to reach the Radiance Gene. The first is to take the portal in Steel Beach immediately after activating it to the Container Yard. You'll be able to walk across the box shown in my screen shot above and grab the Dragon Gene.
Alternatively you could also wait until you cross the Desert of Death and find yourself in the Container Yard. Put Garr in your party and push the crate you see in the screen shot above into the wall to break it. This will allow you fast travel to and from this area so you never have to cross the horrid desert again.
